Should the government care about the citizens` heath?

According to what Kongzi said, People is the fundamental foundation of a country -No person, No nation. It means that people are the most for a country and will lead a thriving country to be powerful and prosperous. If there are no people in the country, how could the country develop to be strong. Also what is the most important thing to the people? Their health. For this result, the government should offer health service to all citizens because it will bring the U.S. such profits as the social benefits, health benefits and economic benefits.

The first reason is that offering people heath service will bring social benefits. The most obvious benefit is that people will not protest to pay taxes. If the public pay money to the government, the government should have responsibility to take care of them. As an example, if the government take money from the people, but do not care about their health. What will happen? Some people will write “Where is my money?” or “Give the money back to me!”, hand them over their heads and parade in front of the White House. To make the public live in a happy life, the government are responsible to care about their health by giving them health care. In addition, the crime rate will decrease for the reason that the money citizens cost to visit the doctor will be paid by the government. For example, if a person hears that his mother gets a cancer which costs not as little as $10,000, he will probably rob of the bank to save her mother`s life. The benefit becomes so unforgettable that the government will get stable taxes income and work easily because of crime rate decreasing.

The health benefits are the second factor to make the health service offering necessary. First, people will be in a good condition of physical health with health service. For instance, the most “famous” disease in America is obesity. According to Department of Health and Human Service,” In 2006, only four states had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Twenty-two states had a prevalence equal or greater than 25%; two of these states (Mississippi and West Virginia) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.”( Department of Health and Human Service,2007,July 27) Otherwise, if the government refuses to provide health service to citizens, people may not visit the doctor when they get sick. Over and over, this will affect personal physical health so badly that the citizens will get fatter and fatter and the number will be bigger and bigger. On the other hand, in a long time, people with health service could not get psychological problems. For example, if AIDS affects someone and the government will not pay any money to treat him, then he cannot do anything but wait to die. What is the feeling of waiting to die? People may be disappointed, get mad or even suicide. The psychological illness is the most difficult disease to cure. Above all, health service should be given to all citizens for keeping them in good physical and psychological health by the American government.

The third consideration that the government should agree to serve American people health service is the economic benefits. The economy growth will increase with health service for all people. Obviously, if people cannot receive health service from the government, they have to visit the doctor by using their own money and everyone knows that it is very expensive to see a doctor in the USA. So the citizens will save money or spend the money on treating themselves instead of purchasing basics like cars clothes and food such as Louis Vuitton, Ford GT and KFC, which causes the economy develop slowly. Also, the taxes could be stable. For example, if people do not go shopping for extra goods, which means the government cannot have money except by raising the taxes, the taxes will go up .Then people go shopping less and less and taxes are more and more, which is a vicious circle As a matter of this fact, the government should never be any hesitated to offer health service to all citizens because everybody likes more and more money.

The last benefits, if the government will offer health service to all citizens is to remove generally and gradually discrimination which is the most serious and sensitive issue. For example, if the health service can only be given to part of all the citizens, there must be someone cannot receive the health care. So how to decide who can get or who cannot? Because of different wealth, different gender, different color of skin or different age, some persons cannot receive it or be given it in others` despised eyes. Who can bear those kind of eyes? None.Everyone have equal rights to receive the health care. Therefore the government cannot give the health service to some “special” parts of all the American public but provide it to all the US citizens.

Opponents of offering health service to all citizen argue that health service to all citizen will cost a lot of money. However, this disagreement is incomplete because if the government do not offer the health service to any one, when the workers get bad illness like SARS, the money costs to cure them is much higher than the price of health service costs. Thus the truth is health service will cost less money because the social benefits, the health benefits and the economic benefits will save American government a lot money and make the public think the government is efficient. On the whole, it is utterly reasonable for the US government to provide all the citizen health service because of such profits mentioned above.

In conclusion, the advantages of offering health service to all citizen are so enormous and it a long-term profits that nobody want to see there are always sick people who are coughing on the streets and the taxes leap by 200%. All American citizens want to live in a healthy, happy and long life. according to the article “Deaths: final data for 2004” given by National Center for Health statistics, the average life expectancy at birth in the USA in 2004 was already 77.8 years ( Miniño, A. M., Heron, M. P., Murphy, S. L. , & Kochanek, K. D, 2007, August 21). Therefore, only if everyone can get health service in the USA. The people will not get mad and more benefits. The best way that the social benefits, health benefits and the economic benefits come out and become big is offering health service to all American citizen by the government. Then the American citizens will live healthier lives and the United States of America will be stronger and more harmonious.

“Who” can remove the “bomb” of population

“$5,000 each baby ,get more babies,get more discount!”this was a headline in a Chinese newpaper several years ago.The article was about selling babies because there were too many in the poor families and they can not feed them enough food.It is terrible that the human beings can be sold. Somehow,people must do something to stop it .So the population control policies and it should be put in place right now .These strateges can not only stop these but also bring us many benefits in many fields such as environment,economy and education.

The first reason why population control policies shouled be put in place is because of the environment benefits.The larger the population is ,the more pollution there will be.For example,the Chinese population is 1.3 billion because most of the families have more than five children before the using the population control policies ,and especially in the northeast of China,the sky was not blue but black because it was polluted by the exhaust gaswhich came from the large number of industrial constructs were built by the reason of large population,thus if the population is be controlled by the population control policies,the sky will never be black on the grounds that only a few industrial will be built when consider about the small population .And also the resources are in danger,especially that can not be recreated such as oil ,coal and fossal fuel.If the population control policies are stopped, there would be more and more people using those limited resource.Already in China there is still shortage of food resource in some place even with population control policies.Consequently it is necessary for the people to reduce the pollution and save the resource for protecting the environment where people live and want to live longer.

The second consideration is economic benefits with population control policies the economy is the fundamental affair of any country.The government would save money on public basics instead of spending the money on food and clothes for the extra poor persons.For instance,because of the small population of Carbondale ,there could be some public buildings like REC Center and Health Center .Otherwise if there is a large population ,the government can`t save any money to build the REC Center.On another way, small population maybe make the tax lower because there is less poor people to look after.As a result, the government should be so generouse that they control the tax to be lower or free.It`s obvious that the population control policies need and should be put in place.

The last factor is the educational benefits.The population effects what education a child could have.For instance,in China most of the families supported by farming is so poor that they need their children to work in the field.Sometimes there are two children or more, they can afford only one child `s expense of studying but the others have to work in the field.It is very difficult to choose which one to go to school.Thus they draw lots by getting the piece of paper on which is written the Chinese character that means study.It is “illegal” to seize someone`s rights to study but it is real. Also large population could damage the quality of education. In some Chinese universities ,there are about 100 students in the smallest class and only one professor.Nobody can learn something useful,what`s more,it is too difficult to communicate with the professor..Finally the quality of education must be worse and worse.That is why the population control policies should be put in place,not only for us,but also for all next generations.

Opponets of the population control policies says that the population control policies is against the human rights.However ,this criticisim is untrue that the population control policies are protecting the human rightsThe population control policies is protecting all the human`s rights.For instance, a family has 5 children and enough food to bring them up.But one day the parents want more children,later they have another 5 children which is their rights.However their food is not enough .After using up the food ,what they can eat.In addition,what can the children`s generation have?Nothing.In other words who will protect the grandsons` and granddaughters` rights to own what they should possess?Nobody cares because they are not born in the world . Hence,the population control policies should be be put in place as to protect all the humans` rights.

In conclusion, we know the importance of putting the population control in place. If we do not protect the nature ,people will be unable to see the sunshine through the” black sky”.If the population control policies are adopted ,we will get enough money to live and hand out lower taxes,never worry about how to fill up our stomachs,besides ,the next generation will get qualified education.Finally,we will live healthier and happier lives.Theremore our offspring must appreciate the right decision their fathers make today.

We cannot avoid GM foods

In some developing countries, there are still a number of people dead of hunger because the traditional planting method can only feed so many people. The earth has become more and more crowded and the environment also has become more and more terrible because of the pollution. Otherwise, people are become easier to get sick. Is this the world we want? How long can it last? Nobody want to continue his life in such an environment. Is there any solution to mitigate the problems? Yes, there is. That is the genetically modified food. It can not only relax these problems, but also can bring us many benefits, such as raising the output of crop, protecting the environment and making more money. Therefore, the GM foods should be planted and developed.

Genetically-modified foods are “food plants that have been genetically altered by the addition of foreign genes to enhance a desired trait” (Whitman, 2000,para.1 ). “Since James Watson and Francis Crick cracked the genetic code at Cambridge in 1953, identifying the double helix structure of DNA, the human engineering of genes has been a possibility. But it took two decades for their discovery,…, to yield results in the lab and two more for GM products to appear in the shops” ( “The history of GM foods, “1999,para.2). “In the Nineties, biotechnology moved out of the laboratory into farms and shops, and became a boom industry. In 1990 the first GM food, a yeast, was approved in the UK; in 1992 the first food to be made from a GM ingredient – a vegetarian cheese – went on sale in the UK; and three years ago supermarkets started selling GM tomato purchase” (“The history of GM foods, “1999,para5). Till now there are various kinds of GM foods. Frankly speaking, even though there are so many kinds of GM foods, there is an argument of GM foods about whether the GM foods are necessary for human beings. “But there are signs that the biotechnology bubble may be about to burst. In the US, commercial planting has raced ahead. However, Europe is resisting, and in the UK commercial planting has been postponed, although the Government is going ahead with trials of GM crops”(“The history of GM food,”1999,para.7). Some people think that the GM food is a new product and a growing technique. However, other people disagree with that because the GM foods are against the ethics. (“What are Genetically Modified (GM) Foods?”2007,para.9). In fact, it is maybe that most people know little about GM foods.

The first benefit of GM foods is that it can solve the food crisis around the world. GM plants are much bigger than the common plants. For example, when people go to the supermarket, they always see some “special” hot pepper which is at least two times bigger than the other common vegetables. It is the GM food. Before GM foods coming out, maybe 1 person eats 4 hot peppers a week, but now the truth is that 4 persons eat 1 hot pepper a week. Also, the GM food grows faster. Because the gene is changed, the period when the GM foods are mature shrinks a lot. In traditional agriculture, the farmers should sow seeds in spring and wait to harvest until fall. So the farmers can have a harvest only one time each year. But the GM foods are quite different because they grow faster and less be affected by the weather. According to Whitman“(2000), “Genetic engineering—the same as genetic modification: the alteration and recombination of genetic material by technological means, result in transgenic organisms (“genetic modification,”2007,para.1) on the other hand, can create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly and with great accuracy”(para.2). Therefore, the farmers can harvest twice or more. Then we will get more food because of the big size and fast growing speed. All in all, the GM food will provide so many foods that nobody will be hungry.

The following advantage of GM food is that it protects the environment. Often we use pesticide to kill insects or some kinds of viruses. As the pesticide used, it not only harms the people`s health, but also damages the environment. The GM crops are resistant to the virus, which results in less using the chemical that can remove the disease. "We have created an MSV-resistant maize variety by genetic engineering, using an approach known as pathogen-derived resistance”( “First All-African GM Crop Is Resistant To Maize Streak Virus,”2007,para4). This is an example to prove the resistance of GM food. According this report, it will be true that people could be no longer completely dependent on the pesticide to keep away the insects and viruses from the plant. The GM crop can do that itself, which will protect the nature by reducing the use of those poisonous chemical to the environment. Next, GM food yields more production, which could save a lot of land. Even though people are trying to develop the approach to make the yield of crop raise, it is still not enough. Without any solution, people decide to switch the forest into farmland, which will destroy the environment. On the other hand, now if the farmers plant the GM foods, people do not need to destroy the nature because the output of GM foods are quite enough to get rid of hunger of all the people. In a special way, GM foods make a great contribution to protecting the environment. As a result, GM foods are a good alternative method to solve some thorny problems, such as food crisis and polluted environment, which trouble humans a lot.

The last reason why the GM foods are so important to be supported is making more money. The GM foods save money because they can protect themselves. The reason why GM foods become so famous and impactful is that they can resist the insects, virus and weed. As what Whitman(2000) said, “Growing GM foods such as B.t. corn can help eliminate the application of chemical pesticides and reduce the cost of bringing a crop to market”(para.4). Because GM foods are against the insects and virus, the farmers do not need to spend thousands of dollars per year to buy the pesticide and Herbicide. Also, the GM foods are worth more money than the nature foods. According to Guterl, “On a U.S. farm, a good cow can fetch about $1,000 on the butcher`s block….However, an elite cow—one whose genes are optimized for producing the healthiest, longest-living and most productive offspring—can fetch more than 100,000”(“Would like your fries with your clone?,”2008,para.4).The GM cow is as times price as the price of the cow without any point using genetic engineering. If the farmers introduce 100 GM cows, it is ten million dollars that the farmers can get. Then how about 1,000 GM cows, 10,000 GM cows…?Also, the government will get extra income because they get more taxes. For example, the tax of consuming is 8% of the total price, if a person buys a GM cow, the government could get 8,000 dollars. Nevertheless, if the person buys a normal cow which is worth 1,000 dollars, the tax is 800 dollars that is too much less than the GM cow. Thus, the government will lose much money in the consuming field. So the GM foods have great economic profits not only to the farmers but also to the government.

Opponents of GM foods argue that GM foods are not safe because the changed genes may cause the GM foods to be poisonous. However, this is untrue on the grounds that genetic engineering is a highly accurate technology. GM foods could grow bigger than the normal crops because the gene which controls the plants` size is changed by the precision instruments which do their jobs by order. If the GM foods are not safe, the gene which is related must be altered. But the machine cannot do that without any order about it. So the GM foods are pretty safe for people to eat. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration finally published its conclusion which declared that GM foods are the same with foods from their conventionally bred counterpart( “What's the Beef?” 2008). This is the latest report referring to the GM foods` safety. Not only the FDA make the research of safety of the GM foods, but many other departments also have and they claimed the same result that the GM foods are safe. So there is no need to continue the groundless fear of the GM foods` safety.

In conclusion, the GM foods have so many advantages that it is unreasonable to refuse to popularize the GM foods. First, GM foods can feed up the growing population; by contrast, the nature plants have been falling behind the increasing population. Next, GM foods help the humans to protect the environment by reducing the usage of chemicals used to kill insects or prevent the diseases and viruses. At last, the farmers will make more money to introduce GM foods because they can not only save money but also fetch more money than the common crop. Therefore, the GM foods are an inevitable trend in the future and people cannot set such a great technology aside. Also, the government ought to give full play to its function by spreading the GM foods in the public. Then, in the future, there will be nobody hungry and the nature will be more green and wonderful. The food will be unlimited for people to eat and the life will be easy because the benefits of the GM keep the food yield at the same speed with the population growth.
